Why I Love Mowing: Confessions of Big Sam The Mowing Man

People sometimes ask me, “Darrel, why do you love mowing so much? Isn’t it just grass cutting?” And I tell them, mowing isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. It’s a bit like being a lawn whisperer, a green-thumbed superhero, and a part-time therapist all rolled into one.
So before I get too sentimental about lawns and grass, here’s the honest truth about why I love what I do… and why every blade of grass matters.
Fresh Air Beats Concrete Any Day
Before mowing, I spent my days driving concrete lorries. Don’t get me wrong it’s tough work, but spending hours stuck in a cab surrounded by concrete isn’t exactly what you’d call “fresh air therapy.”
Now? I’m outside most days, with the wind on my face, birds singing, and the smell of freshly cut grass all around. No fumes! No traffic jams! Just me, the odd customer with a cuppa, the mower, and whatever Mother Nature throws at me.
Honestly, I wouldn’t swap it for the world.

Transforming a Jungle Into a Garden Masterpiece
One of the best parts? Seeing the transformation. Turning a lawn that looks like a wild jungle into a tidy, neat carpet of green is nothing short of magic.
I love that moment when the mower’s finished, and the lawn looks so sharp you could eat your picnic off it (though I recommend a blanket).
It’s like giving nature a fresh haircut and a pep talk.
Meeting Customers and Making Friends
Mowing isn’t just about grass; it’s about people and their homes. I meet all sorts of wonderful customers some who just want a tidy lawn, others who want a chat about family or the weather.
Over the years, I’ve built great relationships. There’s something special about sharing a joke over a hedge or hearing stories of times in the garden whilst emptying the grass bag.
It’s a real community vibe, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

More Time for Family
One of the best things about this job is that it lets me spend more quality time at home with my three children.
Being outdoors all day, as part of a small family run business means I’m not stuck to working when I am told and I get to be around when it matters most.
Mowing for a living gives me the flexibility to balance work and family life, making sure I don’t miss those important events, whether it’s helping with homework, attending a school assembly, playing in the garden, or just having a laugh together after a day well spent.
The Job Satisfaction is Real
You know that feeling when you finish a job well done? That pride and accomplishment?
Mowing gives me that every single day.
No matter how tough the grass has been, or how busy the day, walking away from a lawn looking tip-top is a great feeling. It’s honest work, with honest results. And hey, if I can make someone’s day by giving them a lawn they’re proud of, that’s a win in my book.

The Big Sam Family
How I Met Sam and Leanne (And Why they’re Family)
Years ago, it was Pippa (my wife) who introduced me to Sam and Leanne. We hit it off immediately and since then, they’ve become more than just colleagues. So much so that their daughter now carries Pippa’s name as a lovely nod to the friendship that started it all.
That’s the kind of connections this team builds: not just with customers, but with people you can trust, rely on, and share a laugh with.
Why I’m Grateful Every Day
At the end of the day, mowing is about more than just grass. It’s about nature, community, friendship, family, and a good dose of green therapy.
If you’re thinking about letting someone else take care of your lawn, just know there’s a whole team of us who love doing it because for us, it’s not just a job, it’s a passion.
So here’s to lawns well mown, friendships well nurtured, and a life spent outside whenever possible.
