Big Sam The Mowing Man

In 2023 we launched Big Sam The Mowing Man

This being a completely new venture outside of our comfort zone, meaning seasonal work, more regular scheduling, new pricing structure and new services.

We partnered up with Darrel to make this expansion possible, who had the skills and the knowledge of lawn care and mowing to offer the same high standard of service we already offered with Big Sam The Window Man .

Darrel is the main man for mowing although Sam and Leanne do get out on the mowers where required!

The team have the best knowledge and experience to ensure the correct care of your lawn, ensuring crisp edges, a clean stripe and a healthy thatch, moss free lawn.

In 2023 we started with fresh minds and a keen passion with our main objective being to offer a top quality , reliable and a trusted service of lawn mowing to our local area.

We believe we have achieved this in the last 3 years and as we head into our 4th year, it has been a success with happy customers both locally and a bit further afield .

2024 was later starting than we would have liked, as the rain didn't ease off until mid April and did not allow us to get going. This meant that by the time we could get out mowing, lots of lawns had grown a bit too much and required a bit more time and effort to get them looking tidy again.

This didn't take long as we implemented a schedule or slow cut to start the season, giving the plants a chance to recuperate from the wet winter.

2025 started stronger with our mowing crew out on those lawns from mid March, meaning we can give customers lawns the care they needed as the sun began to shine.

Unfortunately Darrel took some time off mid-season due to an Injury but with the help of other friendly local businesses, family and The Big Sam Team - we had a very successful year and even managed to fit in some new customers.

We provided regular maintenance cuts to larger lawns, kept edges stimmed and tidy whilst also tackling some new build lawns, which needed a little TLC as the plants established there new roots.

Darrel - through hard work and physio was back on the tools, with a new passion (and a couple of plates and screws around his spine) just in time for those last cuts - leaving his particularly straight stripes all over Heathfield, Hailsham and Uckfield.

2026 - We are ready for you and tooling up ready for the season ahead....

Equipment is key

Having the correct tools for the job is vitally important to achieve the best look and looked after lawn.

We have a variety of mowers so the correct tool can be used for the specific job. After a lot of feedback, review reading and chatting to fellow companies we purchased the mowers and correct equipment for the job.

Within our range we have the choice of:

Hayter 56 Pro - For the larger lawn, wi th striping ability.

Hayter 48 - For smaller domestic lawns, striping ability

Hyundi 430 - Our rough cut mower with the ability to mulch the cuttings, especially for those over grown lawns.

Strimmers - To ensure a clean edge and tidy finish.

Leaf blower - To make sure we leave tidier than when we arrived.

This gives us the ability to choose the correct mower and equipment to suit the needs of you garden.

Leaving our stripe near you

Originally we hadn't planned to stripe lawns but soon realised this leaves a lot cleaner and professional finish to the lawn.

Adding a stripe also has other benefits for the grass as well, it allows the distribution of sun across each blade to increase and in turn creating a healthier and happier lawn.

The art form of a straight stripe is developed with experience and our mowing team have mastered this very quickly.

In our opinion, even on the shortest cut lawns - adding a stripe finishes the job nicely!

Overgrown gardens

We all have those times when life just gets a bit much and our garden becomes least of our priorities. Health problems may restrict us from completing the garden to the usual standard we would like, or even if you really don't get any joy from gardening/lawn mowing - we are here to assist you.

A Very Grass-y Christmas and a S parkling New Year from all at Big Sam's

Well folks as 2025 draws to a close:

Big Sam The Mowing Man has settled the mowers for resting, the grass has finally stopped growing, and the only thing he is trimming this month is the Turkey.

Whilst Big Sam The Window Man is making the final reindeer dash to the end of year, dodging fairy lights and removing the odd Christmas bauble from a blocked gutter, with the odd mince pie along the way.

As Christmas jingles into East Sussex, we have swapped our usual lawn stripes for candy canes and window cleaning poles for sleigh bells, to take a moment to thank all of our lovely customers old and new in Uckfield, Heathfield, Hailsham, Polegate, Lewes and every village, town, and tea-making home in between.

It’s been a brilliant year, and before we officially pop on our paper crowns and dive into the Chocolate tin, we thought we’d share a little festive cheer (and maybe a gentle reminder or two… because we’ll be back before you know it!).

A Big Thank You (Like: Santa-Sized )

To everyone who booked with us this year, waved from the window, offered a biscuit, or just trusted us with your home and garden - we are seriously grateful.

From those chimney top windows in Polegate to those long lawns in Mayfield and gutters over flowing in Uckfield, every job has been a joy - Even the mossy lawns and green windows!

We’ve had hot days, surprise rainstorms, barking dogs, kids shouting, wildlife rescue and more than a few friendly chats over the garden gate.

It’s what makes doing this job in East Sussex such a pleasure.

The Mowing and Windows May Be Paused … But Leanne Never Stops!

Even though the water tanks have been drained and mower engines are quiet, Leanne is still very much on duty answering queries, and sending updates. She is firing on all pistons to ensure the end of year close down is complete before looking ahead to booking in the first window cleans of 2026 and ensuring your spring lawn care slots are ready to book as soon as the sun shines.

If you are a long term loyal customers you will know: we don’t mess around when it comes to being organised! You’ll get text alerts, social media updates, fast replies, and a proper human touch. It’s home care, but with heart.

So if you’re sat with a mulled wine wondering if it’s too early to book your Marc h Mow or your Blow up snowman is getting flooded by an overflowing blocked gutter - well it is never too early or out of season and the elves (well, Leanne) are ready and waiting.

A Bit from the Big Man himself

2025 started with a boom and we welcomed more new customers than ever across March and April (71 to be exact) - then in May I took a hot foot over to Mowing whilst Darrel took an unexpected lay down!

With Alistair, Ash, Keith, James and Leanne's 'can do' attitude we marched on like a parade of pipers pipping keeping those lawns crisp and windows gleaming .

We have closed off 2025 with celebrations for 10 years in business and 40th birthdays (me not looking quite as fresh as the business), welcoming back Darrel and expanding the team with Gary being welcomed to the Big Sam family.

A few little festive tips for those windows:

Keep those windows ventilated to avoid build up of damp inside.
Remove any window decorations, especially cello tape, to avoid leaving nasty marks stickier than Christmas pudding.
Its never too late for a gutter vac - The frosty mornings will continue into January, and our gutter clearance continues throughout the year.
If great aunt Dot unwelcomingly comments on your grubby tops (or bottoms) - then we can bring back the sparkle with a soffit and fascia clean in the new year.
Most of all Have fun and a restful break - we will be back to conquer the sticky finger marks in January.

A Bit from The Mowing Man

Not quite the year, I had expected but it was great to catch the end of the mowing season and check Sam hadn't broken too much in my absence.

The equipment is all cleaned and had its yearly spa at PP Estates, we are ready to rock and roll in 20256 as soon as the weather allows us.

Your grass is mostly sleeping, through the frosty mornings and dark evenings, - But that doesn’t mean you should forget about it completely.

A few little festive tips:

Clear any leaves or decorations sitting on the grass

(even that inflatable Santa).

Avoid walking on frozen lawns - it’s not good for the turf
Keep an eye out for moss trying to move in.
Treat your lawn like your nan’s best tablecloth: don’t spill stuff on it, and don’t leave things sitting on it too long.

Come March, we will be back with freshly serviced mowers, crisp blades, and the same friendly service you know and love.

But here’s the thing: first cut slots go fast!

A day in the life of......

Big Sam admin , content creator, lawn mower assistant, interior window cleaner, complaints department, accounts, HR, debt collector, Mother, Wife and anything else that gets thrown into the mix!

Many of you know my name from my signature sign off, Leanne (Big Sam admin), at the end of any text messages, Facebook post, E-mails and any other communications you receive and I am not going to lie quite often if its signed off as Sam, its usually me too that has researched, written, edited and submitted the information before the Big man himself proof reads and clicks send!

When Big Sam The Window Man was established in 2015 we had not long had our daughter Pippa, so my maternity leave was soon given an extra twist of being the unofficial admin for Big Sam's, which was handy really as, for anyone who knows me, I am not very good at doing nothing.

As the business grew and our family grew, we decided that the aim for me to stop my part time employment and become a permanent feature of the Big Sam office, really wasn't a bad idea and could actually work!

In 2021 I quit my role as Activities Coordinator at a local care home and took on the role full time.

My office hours are flexible around our 2 children, the school run and the 100 clubs they attend (honestly better social lives than either myself or Sam), the evenings are still often late but it works around our little family, which as any working mum knows - is hitting the jackpot!

So for those who really do wonder what my full role is and why I may not always answer on the first ring of the phone: Here is a typical day in the life of me - a Monday to be precise as everyday is different!

Rise and Shine to a fresh new day and week!

Its all hands on deck: Kick starting the day with a quick overview of messages that have come in (checking for nothing urgent!), whilst serving up bowls of cereal and toast, and loading school bags.

Sam is in full swing too, getting sorted for the day and making a run for it before the lost shoe debacle begins. Although today we had the rare treat of enjoying Sam's company, as he started later.

School run time , we walk to school each day and its such a great way to get a bit of exercise and wake up the brain for the day ahead at work and school. It also allows me a bit of time for social interaction that isn't phone or computer based too, improving my mood after the morning rush.

Back in the office - Its time to deep dive into the work which has stacked up over the weekend - Processing worksheets from the previous Friday, including sending out quoted prices and booking in new customers, setting up payments for subcontractors for last week, invoicing, checking data and figures, and updating all the lovely spreadsheets.

Calls from the team out on the road, checking a note from the worksheet or struggling to locate a new potential job - google maps and street view to the rescue.

Calls, texts and messages with customer are non stop throughout the day and squeezing them in between the workload is part of the parcel.

Quick gym session (I only get a chance to go twice a week in the day so take the opportunity whilst I can!)

Back to the communications : time to get everyone informed of there cleans/cuts this week then quotes, quotes and more quotes!

Noon

Lunch over social media : A quick feed whilst also updating and creating reels, preparing and scheduling the next post, sharing fellow companies advertisements and advertising on community pages where possible.

Dinner prep is a must on a day like today as everyone is in and out for different clubs and jobs - The Slow cooker is truly my best friend at this time of year. Washing and a quick tidy up as any parent knows, it is never ending.

Banking updates (This is my least liked job!) Bank reconciliation, then onto follow ups of missed payments, and debt collection where required.

I sometimes get an hour or so to complete the tasks that aren't routinely in my week - todays is placing a uniform order with my ever so patient Monty at Chameleon designs , ready for our newest team member and checking if anyone else needs a top -up.

Afternoon School run : got to be a quick turnaround today so short way home, much to Bennie's annoyance, snack, drink and onto the evening.

The manic hours!

Drop Pippa to Netball with the wonderful Boost netball team and Bennie and I run home for some dinner and a quick read of the 13 storey treehouse and log it on Boom reader, as wouldn't want to miss out on those house points .

Bennie and I then hot foot it over to Freedom Leisure Hailsham for his swimming lessons. Whilst the boy swims, I crack on with BLOG writing and website updates.

Sam collects Pippa, fills up with water in the van tank ready for tomorrow and they head home for there dinner - Sam is always greeted with a list of to-do's or queries and questions I have encountered across the day, which we will get back to later.

Everyone finally home and a bit of family time - Todays choice is Horrible History board game.

Evening soon looms

Sam chases the kids to bed and I jump back on the computer to get a bit more office work done - sometimes with the 11 year old assistance (as apparently sleeping before 9pm is not an option these days).

Kids in bed and the final hit of the day - Finishing off the task list which needed joint brain power and writing the 'To do' list ready for tomorrow.

My love of a good list and a highlighter is Sam's worst nightmare but my saving grace when the brain is full.

Final check of the messages and then the magic power off button for the evening!

The call of the sofa, a cup of tea and biscuit and the most recent Netflix series (which Sam will likely snore through).

I may do a spot of social media, responding to recommendations and sharing posts but for now, Big Sam's has been put to bed for the night.

Each day varies drastically as I never know how many customers will call, how many quote requests or who's van/equipment is going to break down and need rescuing.

As some of you are aware over the summer I was dragged out of the office and pushing a mower around Mayfield, Hailsham, Heathfield, Lewes and Uckfield for Big Sam The Mowing Man . I have also been taxi driver to the Predator Gutter Vaccuum when its in Polegate but has ended up in a different van in Chiddingly, delivery spot for the neighbours parcels, dog sitter for the in-laws and networking queen as I am plummeted into different groups and socials to share the work we do.

Its all in a days work and part of what I enjoy most is the variation of my role each day, hearing the positive feedback from everyone - plus I have the best snoozing office assistance to keep me company.

Halloween Special from Big Sam The Mowing Man

It’s October and drawing closer and closer to the end of the mowing season: we have been welcoming

the cooler air, as the evenings are getting darker - you maybe wondering like us what your lawns are planning next?

Well, it’s creeping… slowly… growing just enough to haunt your dreams (and your patio edges).

Welcome to spooky season, where the pumpkins are plump, the spiders have taken over your shed, and your grass is still quietly plotting. While you’re busy dodging fake cobwebs, your lawn is staging one last uprising before winter, especially if we are lucky enough to have one last sunshine hit!

Don’t panic. Big Sam The Mowing Man is here, strimmer over one shoulder and toffee apple in the other hand, ready to banish those spooky stragglers and give your garden the final cut it deserves, to be prepared for a winter break.

Your Lawn Is Alive (Even If It Looks Sleepy)

You might think your grass has gone to sleep for the winter but it is still very much actively growing and developing.

It’s not growing like it did in July, but October is the grass’s last hurrah before winter hits. And if you don’t give it a correct care and attention before winter? It will come back in spring looking like something out of The Garden of Nightmares.

That’s why the last cut of the year is so important. A tidy, well-timed mow now means you will have:

Less moss and mould development over the winter
Fewer boggy patches in January
No waking in March to discover your lawn has grown its own ecosystem.

True Wildlife Tales

Here at Big Sam's, we’ve seen things, Strange things as the temperature drops and evenings drawing in.

In Heathfield, we found a hedgehog curled up in a Halloween bucket. Unclear if it climbed in or was ready for trick-or-treating.

In Hailsham, a fox took off with a customer’s garden glove.

In Uckfield, we have tiptoed around frogs who had set up camp directly in the mower's path. We rehomed them to a safer location before cracking on.

We love wildlife but trust us, even the bees are ready to call it a day by the end of October. Let your last mow be their gentle send-off before hibernation.

Before you put your mower to bed for the winter, there are a few things to take care of. Think of it as an end-of-season ritual not unlike putting the garden furniture back in the garage.

Here’s your Spooky Season Lawn Survival Checklist:

Clear the leaves – They may look lovely and autumnal, but under all that crunchy charm lurks mould, rot, and slug parties.
Give it one last cut – But not too short! Think of it as a trim, not a full buzzcut. About 4cm will do.
Avoid mowing if it’s frosty or soggy.

Honestly, there’s something oddly satisfying about that final mow, the hum of the engine, the smell of fresh-cut grass, and the sight of your lawn looking clean and calm, ready to face winter like a freshly made bed.

Even while the mowers are winding down, Leanne is in the office and is still firing on all cylinders. She’s answering questions, taking quote requests and sending text alerts faster than a witch on a broomstick.

As much as our lawn care is slowing down, windows and gutters clearance are in full swing so Leanne will be about all winter for all your cutting, cleaning and clearing needs, whilst I head off for a bit of hibernation! (If only that last part were true)

Celebrating 10 Years of Big Sam The Window Man

For those of you who follow us on Facebook and Instagram, you will have seen that at the end of August we celebrated 10 years in business, and for those of you that do not, then be sure to head over, pop us a like or follow for more regular updates on our services.

It is really hard to believe how quickly the time has flown, over the last 10 years and how much has changed along the way.

When I first purchased my own window cleaning van in 2015, I had a simple vision: to build a Window cleaning round which was professional and reliable, organised and offered the best cleans.

Today, I'm proud to say we’ve done just that and so much more!

Humble Beginnings

Every business has its origin story. Ours started with a spark of passion, a handful of loyal customers, and a determination to do things differently to your regular window cleaner.

I didn’t have a big budget or a fancy office.

What I did have was commitment to create a better work-life balance for me and my family, experience in window cleaning, supportive family and friends, and a belief that if I focused and worked hard I could offer a top quality service like no other in the area.

For those of you that know me - I also had the gift of the gab and a friendly smiley face to entice and welcome new customers too.

Growth, Challenges, and Lessons

We have definitely had our fair share of challenges along the way and the journey hasn’t always been smooth. We’ve faced van and equipment break downs, operator injury and illnesses, recessions, and even a global pandemic. But every challenge taught us something valuable:

People matter most : Customers, Our team, and community have been the heartbeat of our success.

Never stop learning : Staying curious and open to growth has kept us focused and to the high standards we deliver.

Cheapest isn't always Best : We pride ourselves on providing the best service, from receiving your quote, to booking in and completing the clean. We may not be the budget cleaner some seek but we will not lower our prices or standards.

Tales of a window cleaner

As you can imagine, like any career or business, there is always the stressful and challenging times but there is also the smiles, laughs and stories along the way.

(I feel this part deserves its own BLOG at a later date, because anyone who has had a beer with me knows I have a story or two to share!)

Some of the behind the scenes funnies which bring me joy from my time window cleaning:

Most unique meeting - Showering at the gym, would you believe I ended up handing a card to someone I met whilst showering, this did concern Leanne a little.
Cleaning races - When training someone up, once they have the technique, its time to build speed - what better way than a race to the finish.
Dogs - Being cornered and chased out a garden by a 45kg Doberman - Luckily I had my running shoes on that day and a dog treat in my pocket for distraction and some how managed to clear a 6 foot fence … I am still unsure how.
Peek-a-boo - Having a trainee who is easily made jump is always a fun past-time, this became a competition between us both or who could be the most insight and still make the other jump.
More than the eyes need to see - Yes I have had the situation of almost seeing more than I should - but not through windows as would be expected.

Please note ladies and gents, if you are sunbathing those tan lines away and the window cleaning is due - be sure to keep an ear out for there door knock or they may join you in the garden before you realise and cover up!

Our guide to surviving the 6 week holidays (whilst still running a small business)

Its that time of year again when we are in the thick of 6 weeks of summer holidays.

It fills me with excitement for all the adventures we are having and are going to have but also dread as I have to entertain, feed and keep the house functioning around the sprogs whilst still running Big Sam's.

If you’ve ever tried running a business during the school summer holidays while keeping small humans entertained, you’ll know it’s basically like juggling flaming lawn strimmer's while being asked for snacks every 6.5 seconds and breaking up fights over who's turn it is to pet the dog!

Welcome to my world - I’m Leanne, admin ninja and the 'Boss' lady for Big Sam The Mowing Man and Big Sam The Window Man.

In the last 9 years we have grown to 4 window cleaners out on the road, and 4 full days a week of mowing to squeeze in (as per our last BLOG of Darrel being Out Of Action this summer) but there is still just little old me manning the office for all our customer needs, Big Sam team asks and all the added the extras.

With August being one of our busiest months, it also means Sam is out earlier in the mornings and later in the evenings, ensuring your lawns look sharper than a school uniform on the first day of term and your windows are so shiny you can spot a nose print from 10 feet away.

Just because the children are home from school, it doesn't mean work stops and I manage my time most effectively with early mornings and late evenings, sandwiching the children entertainment in the middle, as well as a lot of screen time for them.

All of us at Big Sam's are very fortunate to have savours of grandparents, friends and family to jump in and mind the children when I am called out to mow or it all 'gets a bit too much' and with childcare costing roughly the same as a weekend in the Maldives, we’ve been on a mission to find the best free (or practically free) days out in and around Horam, perfect for keeping the kids entertained without spending a fortune.

So here it is: our very own tried-and-tested guide to surviving the summer holidays – Big Sam style!

Library Reading Challenge – Peace, Glorious Peace!

First stop on our Summer holiday list is The Summer Reading Challenge at Heathfield Library.

Both kids signed up with excitement (once Bennie was convinced there wouldn’t be a test at the end), and honestly, its been a summer sanity saver.

Pippa’s deep into her David Walliams phase, while Bennie is currently obsessed with anything involving sport or toilet humour.

Most local libraries like Uckfield, Hailsham,

and Crowborough are running the challenge, so do get involved. It’s free, full of stickers and prizes, as well as keeping up there reading skills during the school break and buys you a quiet cuppa. Bliss!

The children can even opt to have there certificate of completion sent to their school for when they return in September.

The Cuckoo Trail – Biking and Scooting

We started one of our days on the Cuckoo Trail from Horam, and made it down to Hellingly with only three snack stops, one grazed knee, and about six billion 'are we nearly there yet'.

We also plan to bus (or ask Sam to lift us) to Hellingly and reverse the route next time.

It's traffic-free, full of wildlife and fun stopping points, and suitable for everything from dogs and scooters to teens pretending they’re not enjoying themselves.

Just remember to bring snacks. And more snacks! Or schedule in a stop at one of the many Cafes along the route.

Wilderness Wood – Hadlow Down

Just a stone’s throw from Horam, Wilderness Wood has been a summer hit. We met some friends at this little hide away, took a picnic (and a flask, I’m no amateur), and the kids climbed, ran wild, and made “potions” out of twigs and mud.

Entry is donation-based, and there’s always something going on, den building, fairy trails, or just the good old fashioned joy of getting grubby.

Highly recommend if your kids enjoy nature and you enjoy a decent coffee while watching them “survive” in the woods.

Abbots Wood – Near Hailsham

Darches Wood - Near Waldron

Sapperton Woods- Near Maynards Green

These one’s are great for all ages. Pushchair-friendly paths, wild play areas, and enough space to shout “STOP LICKING THE TREE” without judgement.

We generally save these gems for when the temperatures sore and they provide a good area for sheltered play out of the blistering heat (which both our gingers definitely need) yet allowing somewhere to run off the ice-cream energy.

These are also prime locations for a bit of Geocaching - the biggest treasure hunt across the world.
We downloaded the App for FREE 2 years ago and it definitely keeps those tired little legs walking when they know they have a cache to hunt out, especially when its a trading box.

The Seaside

Whether its an early morning paddle or sea swim, rock pooling at low tide, walking or treasure hunting. The local seaside is a great day out for us all. Even better when Sam gets an earlier finish and we head down for an evening of fish and chips.

The seaside allows both the children the opportunity to find something to do or someone to play with, without bothering me too much as I try to catch up on the laptop. I am also keen on hunting out those Sealife creatures as the children impatiently yell 'Get it mummy!'

As we sit here now the kids wanted to share their favourite parts:

Pippa's favourites: Paddle boarding, pebble decorating (we always carry a set of permanent markers).

Bennie's must dos: finding treasure and crabs or building the biggest castle. Ice-cream!

Meanwhile… Business Doesn’t Stop!

While the kids are exploring and I’m bribing them with Cheese crackers, Big Sam and the team are out doing their thing across Horam, Heathfield, Uckfield, and Hailsham. Mowing lawns, cleaning windows, clearing gutters and providing a slight bit of entertainment for the customers kids as they all struggle through too.

I’m juggling it all from home - answering messages between snack breaks and trying to remember who I’ve invoiced while Pippa gives me live commentary on the book she’s reading and Bennie asks how much we’d have to pay to keep a goat in the garden.

It’s busy, it’s bonkers, and it’s very real. We love our work, and we love our customers even more when they’re patient while I’m also mediating a dispute about who stole whose felt-tip.

Horam Recreation Ground – Perfect for scooting, football, picnics, and burning off that energy (be sure to keep an eye open for Skatejam hosted by the Parish council)

Wilderness Wood, Hadlow Down – Magical woodland for climbing, den building, and fairy hunting. Entry by donation..

Blackboys Playground – A peaceful spot with great equipment for younger kids.

Heathfield Millennium Green – A calm natural space ideal for mini adventures and bug hunts.

Ghyll Road Park, Heathfield – One of the best parks in the area, with loads of play equipment for older and younger children.

Buxted Park – A lovely spot for a family walk, with a lake, woodland trails, and a play area tucked away.

Isfield Locks - A short walk across the fields and follow the river for some historic locks and beautiful fountains. Might be lucky to see the odd boater from Barcombe Mills too.

Lake Wood????? - Surreal woodland and pond, great for exploring and rock clambering

Arlington reservoir - A circular walk which can be extended across the local fields. Can highly recommend the cake son offer in the Kiosk, all home made.

Across East Sussex – Worth the Drive

Seven Sisters Country Park, near Seaford – Cliffs, riverside walks, and paddling spots.

Classic East Sussex views and loads of fresh air.

Friston Forest – Woodland trails galore, ideal for older kids on bikes or exploring.

Crowborough Country Park – Peaceful and full of wildlife, perfect for nature lovers.

Hampden Park, Eastbourne – Big play area, duck ponds, skate park, woodland, and often a free event or two in the summer.

Princes Park, Eastbourne – Lakes, a play park, and wide open spaces – perfect for a picnic.

Shinewater Park – Open fields, nature trails, and great views – plus free parking!

Battle Abbey Field Walks – You don’t have to pay to go inside the abbey – just wander the historic grounds and soak up the atmosphere.

Lewes Railway Land Nature Reserve – Quirky wooden walkways, riverside spots and a good mix of wildlife and wildflowers.

Ashdown Forest (Winnie the Pooh country!) – Explore the famous Pooh Bridge, pack a picnic, and let imaginations run wild.

Why I'm Currently Watching the Grass Grow (and Letting The Team Mow It)"

Well, folks, this isn’t the blog post I thought I’d be writing this summer!

I was expecting to be knee-deep in grass cuttings , dodging the odd bee , and admiring my tidy lines across lawns like a proud artist .

Instead, I’m currently navigating life from a horizontal position, discovering muscles I didn’t know existed (most of which now ache), and learning just how tricky it is to scratch your nose when one arm is out of action.

Let me rewind a bit and explain what’s happened, and more importantly, thank the absolute legends keeping this Big Sam The Mowing Man ticking over while I try to regrow a spine and wrist.

The Stag Do to End All Stag Dos

It all started on a glorious weekend in May at Bike Park Wales. Picture it: a group of blokes, buzzing with adrenaline and energy drinks, zipping through the trails, trying not to end up on 'You’ve Been Framed'.

It was my stag do, one last wild hurrah before saying “I do.” And it was epic… right up until the last run of the day!

Now, if you’re into mountain biking, you’ll know there’s always that one voice in your head saying, "Maybe just one more ride." That voice is a liar. That voice is not your friend!

One overly ambitious jump and a poorly timed landing later, and boom: I met the ground with all the enthusiasm of a sack of spuds being chucked from a second floor window. Straight onto my head - T4 spinal fracture! Compound fracture of my left wrist! And this, dear readers, was a week before my wedding.

Basically, I hit the ground so hard I bounced off the wedding plan entirely.

So… The Wedding?

From “I Do” to “Do You Need Help Sitting Up?”

Our big day was meant to be one week later. One week! But instead of walking down the aisle, I was flat on my back in Cardiff’s University Hospital trauma unit, being looked after by a team of absolute angels in scrubs, and missing what should’ve been the happiest day of our lives.

We made the tough call to postpone the wedding until next year. And honestly, it was heart-breaking. But it was also the right thing to do.

Because I want to walk down that aisle!

Teamwork Makes the Lawns Work

Which brings me to the heroes of this blog post: Leanne, Sam and James.

While I’ve been laid up, these absolute champs have stepped in to keep your lawns looking smart. Leanne ’s been steering the ship like a pro and donning her walking shoes to push that mower around. Sam has been giving each mow the precision of a man cutting the Queen’s lawn, and James (Le anne’s nephew) has been getting stuck in with more energy than a toddler on Haribo.

They’ve been out in all weathers, on all types of terrain, working hard to keep the business going while I try to rebuild myself into a functioning human again. It hasn’t been easy, but they’ve done it all with smiles, skill, and a few well-timed tea breaks.

So to Leanne and Sam (my loyal partner-in-mow who I’m pretty sure now qualifies for sainthood) , thank you from the bottom of my brace covered back. You’ve gone above and beyond, and I owe you big time. Possibly in pints.

To Our Customers: You Absolute Icons!

And to our wonderful customers: thank you for being patient, understanding, and supportive while we navigate this unexpected detour.

Some of you have checked in, sent kind words , or simply kept booking as usual without a fuss. You’ve made what could have been a very stressful time feel that little bit lighter and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.

I know the service may have felt a little different without me behind the mower, but I trust you’ve been in very good hands.

The team’s been doing an amazing job, and your lawns are looking better than ever. Honestly, I’m not sure I’ll be allowed back at this rate!

When Will I Be Back?????

Ah, the million pound question!

The short answer: not quite yet, but I’m getting there.

Recovery from a spinal fracture isn’t exactly a sprint, it’s more like a cautious shuffle with frequent naps. I’ve had surgery on both my back and wrist, and while I’m healing nicely, these things take time (and a lot of hospital sandwiches).

My doctors are optimistic, and I should make a good recovery , but it’s going to be a few months before I’m back behind the mower and lifting grass bags without needing a nap afterward.

Grass Still Grows, and So Do We:

Running a small business is always an adventure, but nothing quite prepares you for an unexpected injury, a wedding, and a crash course in rehabilitation all at once. But what I’ve learned is this:

A strong team makes all the difference.

Good people will rally around when you need them.

And NEVER, EVER say “just one more run.”

I’m incredibly lucky!

Not just because I survived a very nasty accident, but because I’ve got amazing people around me—on the team, at home, and out in the community. And while this wasn’t the summer I planned, it’s one I’ll never forget .

Summer Madness

Wow! The madness of Summer really has hit us at Big Sam's

As we are amidst the Summer of 2025, this year we really have hit the ground running and have not stopped!

The sun has shone, the rain has been intermittent and the winds have blown. All of these weather systems increase the requests for quotes and bookings among our window cleaning and mowing services.

We had our biggest month yet with over 100 new jobs quoted in May and April, resulting in 45 new starters choosing Big Sam for their services. Thank you to all new customers who have been patient whilst we arrange to price and clean for you.

As always, this is only possible with the support we receive from our Big Sam community: that's you and all your lovely recommendations - Thank you for your on going support.

Summer not only brings an increase to our quote requests, admin work and cleans but also holidays, sports days, kids clubs and for Leanne and Sam especially, lots of birthdays!

This year it has unfortunately also brought some sick leave to Darrel (more on that in our next BLOG) however we have all been able to pull together, putting in extra hours where needed, pulled Leanne out of her cool office and taken on the challenges life has thrown at us.

Summer is a great time to refresh your home and give it a new lease of life , whether that be because you cant sit in the garden looking at the grime anymore or because your house is on the market and you want to improve the kerb appeal.

Summer maintenance jobs we would recommend include:

Soffit and fascia cleaning - For those of you who are unsure what these are. The soffit is the white bit that runs between your guttering and house. They often have vents which are particularly popular with spiders so a good clean also ensures these are web free. Fascia's are the vertical bit that runs up to the gutter, these are prone to getting green and grubby over the winter months.

Weatherboarding - If your home has any sort of UPV cladding then this would be considered weather boarding and depending on location can need annual cleaning to prevent any dirt from staining the material. We always recommend to have this service completed regularly as once ground in, its hard to remove and get looking nice again.

Garage doors, out buildings or sheds - These may not be top priority for some however a quick rinse over can help maintain these areas of your home for longer periods as well as looking nicer as you sit in the garden with a cool beverage over the summer.

Mowing and strimming - I don't need to say anymore!

Mowing update

As all our mowing customers are aware, Darrel has had to take a break from mowing, following a serious accident whilst mountain biking: Keep your eyes peeled for our next BLOG from Darrell himself of his 'adventures' this summer.

We have however introduced a new faces whilst Sam has taken on mowing: Sam has been joined by our nephew James .

James has quickly learnt the value of a hard day work as Uncle Sam has been chasing his tail to keep up with the standards we set here at Big Sam's. If you are a keen fisherman or an interest in cars then James is the man to say hello too.

Going forward we working hard behind the scenes with Darrel to find a longer term solution and will update all as soon as we know what our next steps are.

We appreciate the patients from everyone of our customers over the last few months especially as Sam has been completing less windows than usual and Leanne hasn't always been on the end of the phone.

Special thanks also to all The Big Sam Team who have stepped up to complete extra window cleaning, stayed late and been the best back bone of support to not only Sam but Leanne and Darrel too.

Summer 2025 in summary has had a few surprises for us but we strive and move forward together, continuing to deliver the services you require and to the highest standard, and it has not come without its high points too:

I particularly have enjoyed being out 'on the tools' (although I may not have said that when lawn mowing in the heat wave last week), it has given me the opportunity to meet lots of lovely customers who I originally only knew as a name and address on our computer programme or a voice on the phone, as well as giving me the opportunity to get snap happy, collecting photos and videos for our social media and website.

You may have also noticed that Sam has become a lot trimmer in his physic, a mixture of increased stress and change in work based exercise has definitely been good for the body.

Alistair has continued to strive within Heathfield and is almost at full capacity for window cleaning, meaning we are able to look at expanding further and seek a new cleaner to join the team soon.

Ash has taken on more Hailsham cleaning and we are now starting to receive a steady flow of quote requests from Polegate, Willingdon and Hampden Park meaning Big Sam The Window Man is available to complete cleans in more areas than before.

Darrell although out of action, he is making slow and steady progress with his recovery and has been a helpful 'phone a friend' lifeline to keep the mowing round running smoothly and saved Sam getting lost finding places on numerous occasions.

As we move into the next chapter of the summer, school holidays, we are ready to take on the challenges and stay focused on delivering the best and faultless Window Cleaning and Mowing services we strive to achieve for you all.

Water Fed Pole system (WFP)

Busting the Myths and making sense of the technical jargon!

There are some rumors and negativity of the water fed pole system being used to clean windows, and although it is more widely accepted now we do still get the odd ‘do you not offer the traditional method?’

We understand as a nation we are resistant to change, and traditionally your window cleaner would arrive with a ladder, bucket and shammy. However from the start Big Sam The Window Man have only ever offered Water fed pole (WFP) cleaning and can 100% reassure you that this method is as good as, if not better than traditional cleaning.

First and foremost, the main reason all our operations use long poles is because we like to keep our feet firmly on the ground ! Not only is it very difficult and expensive to get insurance for working from heights, the health and safety and risk assessing behind it is ludicrously complicated.

Sam also isn’t a big fan of heights!

Water fed pole cleaning (if done correctly) provides a safe, cost effective, streak free clean to your windows, soffits, fascia's and weatherboarding.

The water we use is filtered to below 10 parts per million meaning any impurities are removed effectively making it purer than rainwater.

‘Why do my windows get streaky and dirty after a heavy rainfall?’

we hear you asking.

The dirt residue left behind after rain or a storm isn’t from the pure rainwater, but from contamination it gathers on its travels through the atmosphere (dust, pollution and chemicals mainly) before it hits your windows. This could be from around the window, the building above, wind blowing dust particles or anything of this description.

We operate with tanks of up to 750 litres in the back of our vans, so no water is ever used twice on any window . The brush heads we use are specifically chosen from a variety of suppliers and have been tested by all our team for the best effectiveness to ensure scrubbing is only ever needed for stubborn dirt such as bird mess or grimy edges.

WFP is also better for the environment. Because we use filtered water this means there is no need to add in any chemicals which may leave behind residue or contaminate local water sources around your home.

This is also the reason why it is important to leave the windows wet, no drying required , resulting in only the water evaporating from the glass and no chance of any residue being left behind.

If you have had a bad experience of the WFP system, this is often due to water filtration not being the correct level and operators not being aware of the importance of correct filtration, here at Big Sam The Window Man, we test our levels weekly using a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter, adjusting our filtering system as necessary. Each member of the team is trained on how the water should be filtered, stored and tested.

We believe there is still a place for traditional cleaning within the industry with some older and more delicate windows this maybe the best route. Likewise if you are limited on vehicle access to the property, however we will always advise on quoting if this is the case.

We know the age-old debate of WFP vs Traditional will continue for years to come among cleaners as well as customers, hopefully we have at least given you some knowledge and understanding now so you can be fully informed to how it works and why we opt for this method!

We love to share who we are!

What better way to start our newly established blog than introducing who we are and what we do as part of the Big Sam team.

Our team is built on a variety of wonderful and unique people who all bring their own talents and personalities which makes us who we are!

Our joint ambition is to deliver a top quality service, in an organised and friendly manner, providing operators you can trust around your home.

Big Sam

Starting with the main man himself, Sam . T he founder of Big Sam the Window Man and the head of our chatting and socialising department!

Sam started his working life at COOP as a school leaver, he then went on to a role within a local wood yard where the hours were long, the pay was average and the management not so delightful.

Sam was then offered the opportunity from a friend to window clean in the Haywards Heath area, and this is where his interest for window cleaning and customer service began.

In 2015 Sam was settled in his first home with his partner, Leanne and their new baby girl. The desire for a better balance of work and family life inspired Sam to start his own company.

So here we are almost 10 years later. Sam’s family have now moved to Horam, became husband and wife, added a son to their clan and continue to grow Big Sam’s.

Sam now spends his working days doing a variety of window cleaning, mowing and office admin, but is never far away to answer anyones questions!

In his spare time Sam enjoys gaming on his playstation, having a well earnt beer with friends, and supporting the kids with whatever club they are attending, be it football, rugby, netball, swimming or Brownies. The family also have a touring caravan and when the opportunity arises they like escape for an adventure and to recharge.

Alistair

Alistair was next to join the team in 2021 after a long career with a local fencing contractor. He was then introduced to Sams family through a mutual friend which is where his part in our story begins.

Alistair was our first franchisee to join the team covering the Heathfield and Horam area. As a team we all the learnt the ropes of operating more than one window cleaning round, which was no easy task in the beginning. He has grown his round significantly with the support of Big Sam and his own fantastic work ethic, and it is now almost full capacity and he is keen to take the next step in his franchises development.

When not cleaning Alistair enjoys spending time with his teenage son wherever their feet may land from banger racing to bike riding, and going on walks with his partner and their family dog.

Alistair is always on the go and can often be found tinkering around the home, in his garden and on his van. As a qualified mechanic he likes to fix, mend and improve his his van and system wherever possible. He has also invented a variety of solutions to keep all his equipment safely stored in the most effective and tidy way.

Alistair has a diverse set of interests and has recently picked up a hobby in 3D printing, which the Big Sam family are over the moon with as he often delivers his creations of fidget toys to them in the mornings.

He is our go to man when we have something out of the ordinary on the horizon, or an important task to complete, his skills and knowledge are broad and never ending.

Darrel

Darrel spent many years driving and delivering concrete and became friends with Sam through a close school friend, Darrel’s soon to be wife.

When Darrel expressed an opportunity to Sam that he was interested in something new, Sam jumped at the chance in starting and sharing the new venture of Big Sam The Mowing man.

Darrel and his family also live in Horam, and his big passion in life is off road bike riding. He will travel the earth where possible to walk up a mountain to go as fast as he can on the way back down. Darrel has also recently taken up fishing and is learning the rods and enjoying the peace of being lake side.

Darrel’s children are still young but with his fiancée working shifts nursing, he is often seen with both children out exploring the local area, trying new food places or seeing the sights of London as he teaches them the way of the world.

Darrel is the man for all lawn care needs but can also put his had to window cleaning so you will often see him changing his role as and where suited and required.

His favourite part of his role is leaving a nice tidy finish, be that stripes on your lawn with crisp edges, or web free windows that glisten in the sunshine.

Ash

Ash is our newest recruit and is another fellow Horam resident, although Ash trumps us all on the family front with his wife Verity and 4 kids to add into the mix.

Ash has a passion to hit the ground running with an expansion into the Polegate, Langley and Willingdon area.

Sam and Ash met through a mutual love of spending time with the family as their children attend school together. Ash is captain of the local cricket team and quickly persuaded Sam to sign the kids up to cricket with the promise of Friday evening training, a bar and beautiful setting. Unsurprisingly it didn’t take Sam long to get the kids interested in this one!

Ash is a big sports lover coaching his daughters football team, watching his wife play hockey and attending the gym regularly each week.

Ash spent his early working life in the printing industry, and has more recently been learning the art of traditional locksmithing after taking a 5-year break from paid employment to care for their daughter’s medical needs.

Leanne

And finally, there is me! I am Sam’s wife and co-founder of Big Sam's.

I have spent my life mainly working in the care sector from care in community, Brain injury rehabilitation and activities within a care home. These roles never really fulfilled my passion to take a lead and nor did they enable me to excel in a career I am passionate about.

So now I am commander in chief within the office, the organiser of all the operations that keeps Big Sam’s flowing day to day and probably the reason there is an error on your account, sorry in advance!

I am the lady behind the scenes who manages all the social media, scheduling of services, office admin, liaising with customers or contractors and organisation of the boys out cleaning and now a website blog too!

I work the office around caring for our 2 children and you will often hear them 'assisting' in the office when school is out. Much like Sam most of my time is spent ferrying children to clubs and taking our caravan on jaunts when the opportunity presents itself.

When it comes to me time I am passionate about keeping fit following a spinal injury 5 years ago. I love attending a local gym and I can often be seen walking to my destination wherever possible much to both Sam and my children's annoyance!

I also love going to the theatre, seeing live music performances, and spending time with my friends. However most of all I enjoy my creature comforts relaxing at home in my PJs in front of the fire with our dear old dog Rusty.

We are strong believers that it is important to support local charities and causes, giving that little bit extra where possible!

Being part of the small community we are, we understand and see the need for supporting the local community, with fundraising, events and keeping our area clean.

As a whole we can work together to create a better environment and a happier place for us all to enjoy!

In March (when I was originally drafting this blog) as a family, we attended Horam Village Hall for a Volunteer Fair they were hosting.

It was great to meet some wonderful local causes to discuss what they offer and the difficulty of finding volunteers.

We also got involved with helping to plant new hedge saplings, all the digging was completed but we did lend a hand in lifting the rabbit fence and helping to secure it in place.

More hands make light work as they say! Well done to the team who had spent the afternoon digging and planting 60 tiny sapling's and ensuring they are secure.

It was lovely to meet all the representatives of the following charities and hear their stories and volunteering opportunities.

We finished off with a lovely cream tea, gratefully recieved from the village hall committee and sat in the sunshine whilst Sam did his usual round of chatting to everyone.

The committee are also amidst fundraising and developing a pump track which is a real interest to Darrel (Our Mowing Man) and our kids joined the initial campaign to be photographed for the first Justgiving fundraiser.

We have huge respect for all the volunteers in our community and are appreciative and lucky to have such a caring community around us.

My first full time paid job was working for Headway Hurstwood View (now known as Headway East Sussex), where I was employed as a rehabilitation assistance to adults recovering from acquired brain injury.

I thought my role was wonderful as I got to spend my days at the day centre based in Newick, completing Gym work outs with clients, playing pool, computer games, discussing current affairs and so much more fun stuff.

As my time at Headway progressed so did my role and I became more of an active member of the outreach team, eventually becoming the outreach coordinator which worked with the same cliental but in the community where they could be supported to go shopping, to clubs and groups, budget plan, prep meals as well as support to complete anything the individual now struggled with as well as learning to complete independently again.

Headway is an independent charity for adults with Acquired Brain Injury, the day centre as well as the community outreach is dependent on its charity works and this service would not be available to people in Sussex without the volunteers, charitable donations and fundraisers held for them.

My time at Headway taught me the importance of giving a little extra to make a big difference in someone else's life and I like to continue this ethos when working as part of Big Sam The Window Man
